Australian rapper Iggy Azalea has cancelled her performance at the Pittsburgh LGBT pride event due to racist and homophobic remarks she published on social media in her past.
Azalea tweeted to her fans that she regrets the words she used years ago and says she is “a firm believer in equality.”
“Unfortunately in the past as a young person, I used words I should not have. The last thing I want is for something so carelessly said to be interpreted as reflective of my character. I meant no harm and deeply regret ever uttering those words.”
The female rapper’s decision to withdraw from the celebration came after several groups threatened to boycott Pittsburgh Pride.
“Our board voted last week to not march in the Pittsburgh Pride parade, due to the insensitive choice of Iggy Azalea as headliner,” said Vanessa Davis, of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.
The social media posts in question, which were posted before Azalea’s rise to fame, feature a tweet that said: “When guys whisper in each others ears I always thing its kinda homo”.
