A proposed bill from Cheri DiNovo on behalf of the New Democrats that aims to end conversion therapy may not be passed before the house breaks for the summer.
Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath believes the government is stalling.
“Conversion therapy has caused far too much pain for far too many Ontarians. It needs to stop. It needs to stop now. And we can do that by passing Bill 77.”
Bill 77, Affirming Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Act, seeks to ban the unacceptable practice of conversion therapy, which is treatment aimed at changing sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual.
The bill has yet to be passed due to the Liberal Party and the NDP accusing one another of “playing politics”.
Bill 77 was packaged with proposed bills from other parties but Horwath wishes for DiNovo’s bill to stand alone.
Susan Gapka, member of the Trans Lobby Group, is displeased that the bill is at a standstill.
“It’s really important that young people who are struggling with their gender identity or sexual identity be loved and supported,” she said.
