Cuba is slated to hold a mass gay and transgender wedding ceremony as part of its annual gay pride celebrations. The symbolic ceremony has been arranged by LGBT rights activist Mariela Castro, who also happens to be the daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro.

Castro has played a large role in promoting gay rights in the communist country and says that she hopes the event will lead to further change in the future.

“We can’t do a wedding, but we wanted to have a very modest celebration of love with some religious leaders. In the future, we’ll see what more we can do.”

Castro, who is the head of the National Sex Education Centre and a member of Cuba’s National assembly, says her father does support same-sex marriage, but legislation has yet to be approved.

Cuba has made progress over the last several years in regards to gay rights, among which are the approval of free sex-change operations for qualified citizens and a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation.
