Given the amount of controversy Miley Cyrus has drummed up in recent years, many find it hard to take anything Cyrus says or does as more than just a thoughtless provocation. But, Cyrus has an awareness of social issues that most pop stars tend to shy away from.
“All these things that I do get all this attention,” says Cyrus. “But then what do I do once I have everyone’s attention?”
Well, the answer is the Happy Hippie Foundation which is a non-profit organization conceived to help homeless and LGBT youth.
According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, more than 1.6 million youth are homeless in the United States, and 40 per cent of those identify as LGBT.
“The position I’m in, I feel like I’ve got a lot of power. But, so many kids don’t feel that way. They’re under their parents’ rule.”
To raise money and awareness for the foundation, Cyrus has teamed up with Facebook for the Backyard Sessions – a series of performances from Joan Jett and Ariana Grande, among others, that are set to be filmed in Cyrus’ own backyard.
The videos will prompt viewers to donate and those funds will be used to help create digital support groups for vulnerable youth and their families.
Cyrus plans to stay focused on expanding acceptance for LGBT youth and improving lives for homeless kids for the next five year (at least) before broadening her scope.
