State Representative Randy Boehning has come out as gay after a Grindr user to which he sent sexually explicit photos brought the information to the media.
Twenty-one-year-old Dustin Smith from North Dakota says he confronted Boehning after he voted against a bill that would extend housing, workplace, and other protections to LGBT North Dakota residents.
Smith told The Forum that he had been chatting with Boehning on the gay dating app and had received an unsolicited photo of his penis.
"A [representative] had voted against a bill for the LGBT community and here he was talking to me on Grindr, " said Smith. "How can you discriminate against the person you're trying to pick up?"
After weeks of declining to comment, Boehning finally corroborated Smith's story and said he doesn't feel that sending an explicit photo of himself to a stranger is a lapse in judgment; the exchange of such images is the nature of the Grindr app.
Strangely enough, Boehning is relieved that this information has come to light.
"The 1,000-pound gorilla has been lifted. I have to confront it at some point."
