We are very happy to announce that The Outport Magazine will be a sponsor for Team Boone: a LGBT Curling Team in St. John's, headed to the mainland to compete in a Curling Bon Spiel called the Bluenose Bon Spiel, hosted by the Loose Ends Curling Club, which is an LGBT Curling Club in Halifax.

A message from the team: We are Team Boone, a queer men’s curling team who play in the Monday night men’s league at the St. John’s Curling Club at the Remax Centre. We are fairly positive that we are the first ever self-identified all queer team to play in the league. Our team is made up of Tyler Boone (skip), Corey Follett (mate), Steven Crummey (second), and Matthew Walsh (lead). Tyler started curling over ten years ago. He has been a member of the St. John's Curling Club on and off for the past 6 years and curls in both the men’s and mixed leagues. Tylor is completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and is currently on a work term with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. Corey is the senior member (in age) of the team. This is his third year of curling and he curls in the mixed league and the social league as well as men’s each week. He is an educator in a not-for-profit community education program and pursuing a Master’s in Education currently with a focus on Social Justice Education. Steven is a 25 year-old MUN student, completing his last semester of the BBA program. This is his second season curling, but his first season playing competitively in both the men’s league and the mixed league. Matthew is currently in his second year of curling and curls in the social league and men’s league weekly. He is part of the management team at a local sports store and is very passionate about sports, curling being at the top of the list.

We are traveling to Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 23, 2015, to compete in a Queer Curling Bon Spiel called the Bluenose Bon Spiel, hosted by the Loose Ends Curling Club, which is an LGBT Curling Club in Halifax. We will be the first Newfoundland and Labrador team to ever compete at the event and we are very excited to participate. We hear that there may be teams there from as far away as Washington. As we look towards the upcoming season we would love to start a LBGT Curling Group in St. John’s and are hoping to talk with organizers in Halifax about how and where to start that initiative. Stay tuned for hopefully more details about that for the fall 2015.

The sport is one based on strategy, skill, strength, and etiquette. If you haven’t tried it, we strongly encourage you to come out some time and throw some rocks. What other sport would have you meeting between the sheets?
